GPs prescribing Mounjaro
Access to Mounjaro® for Weight Management on the NHS in North East London
Update – 03.07.25
NHS England has advised GPs to only prescribe Mounjaro (tirzepatide) once their local integrated care board (ICB) has provided the plans and resources to deliver this service. Our ICB- North East London Integrated Care Board (NEL ICB) is working to introduce new specialist services that will provide access to NHS-approved weight loss medications, including Mounjaro®. These services will be rolled out gradually over the coming months.
At this stage and for the foreseeable future, GPs cannot prescribe these medications directly. Instead, eligible patients will be referred to a specialist service that will manage prescribing and monitoring on behalf of primary care once this service has been set up.
To qualify for this service, patients must have:
A BMI of 40 or more *
Plus you will also need to have four of the following five criteria:
- Diagnosed Hypertension
- Diagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
- Diagnosed Type 2 diabetes
- Diagnosed Cardiovascular disease
- Diagnosed Hypercholesterolemia
* BMI of 37.5 or more for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds.
We’ll continue to update this page as more information becomes available.
