Policy for Reasonable Adjustments for Autistic Patients
At Statham Grove Surgery, we are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for all patients, including those who are autistic.
We understand that each patient has unique needs, and we strive to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that everyone receives the best possible care.
If you would like additional support when booking an appointment.
Identifying Needs
- Recording Needs: We have a system in place to identify and record the needs of autistic patients and other individuals requiring reasonable adjustments. This information is securely stored in our clinical records.
- Communication: Patients can communicate their health concerns and needs before appointments using alternative methods such as email, text, or e-consult.
Appointment Adjustments
- Longer Appointments: We offer longer (double) appointment times for patients who need them.
- Consistent Staff: Whenever possible, we provide a consistent, regular staff member to attend to the patient.
- Quiet Times: We offer appointments during quieter times of the day to reduce sensory overload.
Sensory Environment
- Lighting and Noise: We use low, dim lighting and minimize loud noises in our facility. We also provide alternative or quiet waiting spaces.
- Clutter-Free Spaces: Our waiting areas are kept clutter-free, and we avoid using bright and fluorescent colours on signage.
- Sensory Supports: We support the use of sensory supports such as ear defenders.
Communication and Predictability
- Clear Communication: Our staff are trained to use clear, unambiguous language and to ask specific questions. We provide written advice, recommendations, and next steps.
- Predictability: Patients are informed about what to expect during their visit, including waiting times and any potential delays. We provide floorplans and information about our services on our website and at the entrance.
Feedback and Support
- Feedback: We encourage patients to provide feedback about their experiences and any additional adjustments they may need.
- Support: Our specialist autism coordinator is available to provide support and answer any questions patients may have.
Compliance with NHS Standards
- Reasonable Adjustment Digital Flag: We comply with the NHS Reasonable Adjustment Digital Flag Information Standard, ensuring that reasonable adjustments are recorded, flagged, and shared across the NHS.
